On January 27th, sheer bedlam took over Billings! From the North Lounge, to the Round Room, to Cook Commons, some sort of game or activity facilitated by UPB members infiltrated every corner of the building. And literally; there was snow cone making and popcorn popping in the hallways and games of Sudoku hanged on the walls. From the fourth floor of Student Life, a DJ spun everything from classic Madonna hits to Chris Brown’s latest, “Run it.” Thanks to WRUV DJs, Gabe and Brian, old school hip hop beats and obscure dancehall grooves made waiting on lines downstairs for license plate making, celebrity photos, and Feel Good Grilled Cheese sandwiches quite the party. You might have seen the Feel Good stand outside the bookstore last semester, right along with those crazy raver kids (holla!!!), but now every Friday from 11-2pm, you can go downstairs from Cook Commons and grab a delicious grilled cheese sandwich for only three dollars and proceeds go towards fighting world hunger. I recommend the “Cheesus Loves Me”- a wonderful concoction of feta cheese, tomatoes, and spinach.
But that wasn’t the only choice of food for the evening. The infamous Midnight Breakfast went out in style, having a live band energize the atmosphere at Cook Commons. Not to mention there was pizza and pastries upstairs in the North Lounge along with a chocolate fountain for dipping fruit and cookies. YUUUMMM….
The highlight of my night had to be playing (hmm, I mean “facilitating”) Dance Dance Revolution. This game is definitely not as easy as it looks. Having dancing and going to raves for years I thought it would be a breeze….but ah…nope. The premise of the game is to be match your dance steps with those on the screen (indicated by flashing arrows) while keeping up to fast paced club remixes. You can choose from about a hundred songs and well, they are all pretty amazing.
Well…that is all for now. I’m really happy to say that Billings Bedlam was a great success. For all those DDR addicts, I urge you to step away from the screen for a few hours next Friday night at UPB’s Hip Hop Dance Party. I know I’ll be there bringing out all my urban flava.

For those who have not heard the word on the streets, Program Board (UPB) is the new programming organization on campus. So say goodbye to UVMPM and CATs, and hello to the new Program Board. The name “Program Board” isn’t set in stone, so any creative, attractive, and catchy suggestions (that would maybe produce a notable design) are very much appreciated! While off to a fabulous start, Program Board is still building an identity for itself and are tackling many new challenges amidst a rapidly changing university. While staying true to many UVM traditions, they are working hard to create innovative programs that will be woven into UVM’s culture. UPB is working consistently to provide high quality entertainment in conjunction to fulfilling the University of Vermont’s “Common Ground” mission statement. Which is as follows…

RESPECT. We respect each other. We listen to each other, encourage each other and care about each other. We are strengthened by our diverse perspectives.

INTEGRITY. We value fairness, straightforward conduct, adherence to the facts, and sincerity. We acknowledge when things have not turned out the way we had hoped. As stewards of the University of Vermont, we are honest and ethical in all responsibilities entrusted to us.

INNOVATION. We want to be at the forefront of change and believe that the best way to lead is to learn from our successes and mistakes and continue to grow. We are forward-looking and break new ground in addressing important community and socie tal needs.

OPENNESS. We encourage the open exchange of information and ideas from all quarters of the community. We believe that through collaboration and participation, each of us has an important role in determining the direction and well-being of our community.

JUSTICE. As a just community, we unite against all forms of injustice, including, but not limited to, racism. We reject bigotry, oppression, degradation, and harassment, and we challenge injustice toward any member of our community.

RESPONSIBILITY. We are personally and collectively responsible for our words and deeds. We stand together to uphold our common ground.

So with all of that said, my name is Lindsay Beltzer and I’m a member of UPB’s Publicity Committee. If you have any ideas for events let us know! UPB will do all it can to make sure people attend and have a slammin’ time. Program Board was designed to be there for you, the students.

UVMPM joined forces with the ALANA Student Center for this 'sweet' event. Candy Shoppe was the kick off event for our Willy Wonka themed weekend. Over 300 students came to get their sugar fix and dance the night away! Many students decided to dress in costume. Personally I enjoyed the whole gang from Mario Brothers, Yoshi included! Not only was there a dance party and pounds of free CANDY, but there were free waxed hands, sandy candy, tie die tshirt making, and a CHOCOLATE FOUNTAIN! Many students also enjoyed our two showings of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" on the big screen in the Great Hall. If all this was not enough, UVMPM also raffled off several prizes, including the grand prize, an ipod Nano. Congrats to Victoria Burke for winning the Nano!

Tonight, do not forget to check out our showings of Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," staring Johnny Depp.

From the Davis Center newsletter, Campus Crossroads:
On the morning of September 17, 2004, the Board of Trustees Facilities and Technologies Committee approved the construction of the largest and most ambitious building in UVM’s history. Phase I of the new, $61 million, 186,000-square-foot student center is slated to open in Fall 2007 and will serve as a “front door” to the University on Main Street and a gathering space for all members of the UVM community.

The 1986 renovation of Billings Student Center had been a hopeful time for the campus community, but it soon became apparent that this former library space was not suited as a vibrant center of student life. For over a decade, trustees, campus officials, and UVM community members struggled to gain the momentum necessary to implement the plans to build a brand-new facility.

A campus life assessment conducted by WTW Architects/ Brailesford and Dunlavey/Envision Strategies revealed the strong need for such a facility at UVM. An overwhelming majority of students indicated that the campus was lacking a central gathering space, and a traffic study of Billings confirmed this feeling: only 29% of the campus population was entering the space daily, compared with 84% at the neighboring University of New Hampshire.

In 2002, the college welcomed the new President Daniel Fogel. Fogel’s vision to make UVM “The Environmental University” encouraged the Davis Center planning team to strive for LEED certification in the building (for information on green design, see page 2).

The Center is named for the late Dudley H. Davis (‘43), whose family announced a $4.66 million contribution to the project in November of 2004.

The show -- UVMPM's first-ever big event -- took place on Friday, January 23, 2004 and was a huge hit.

Virginia Coalition and Michael Tolcher opened for DeGraw on a frigid January night, but hundreds of students still flocked to the Chapel for the free show.

"Gavin was the first UVMPM event I ever worked, and it was amazing," said UVMPM Crew member Marty Burrows '06, then a sophomore. "It was so cold out, but it was such a great show and experience."

A few weeks after the show, Gavin appeared on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Show. Gavin's drummer, Matt, wore his UVMPM t-shirt and the program made its national television debut! (You can view a clip from the show HERE.)

Gavin DeGraw now commands over ten times what he was paid to perform at UVM, and several hundred lucky Catamounts can now say they knew him when. That 2004 concert was huge for UVMPM and is an important part of the history of Campus Programs on our campus.

The Campus Activities Team is bringing Comedian Dan Ahdoot -- as seen on NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and Comedy Central's "Crank Yankers" -- to campus this Thursday, October 27. The show is free and starts at 9PM in North Lounge, Billings.

Free comedy is great. But who the hell is Dan Ahdoot?

Here's a bio from Dan's official site:

Dan went to college at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University and graduated with honors as a premed student. Shortly thereafter, he decided to take the secure route and ditch medicine for comedy - his parents are still thrilled. After graduating, Dan moved to New York City where he was instantly hailed as one of the hottest young comics on the scene. He performs regularly at every comedy club in Manhattan, and is a founding member of the highly acclaimed Upright Citizens Brigade based improv troupe, Gun Show.

Dan's standup act is based on his hilarious observations about everyday life as a young, hip kid fresh out of college, coupled with his upbringing as a 1st generation American. His stage-presence blends charm, likeabilty, and wit in a way that keeps crowds in stitches and at the same time, very comfortable.

Dan is a finalist on Season 2 of NBCs Last Comic Standing. He has written freelance for Comedy Central's Crank Yankers and has opened for Lewis Black, Jay Mohr, and Dave Chappelle. He has been featured on ABCs 20/20, the 98.7 KISS FM Morning Comedy Special, and he is a regular on Jim Brueur's radio show on Sirius Satellite. He was awarded 1st prize at the Philadelphia Comedy Competition in 2003, the NYC Triad Comedy Competition in 2002 and was an honorary guest at the exclusive HA! Comedy Festival in Manhattan. Dan has also performed at numerous colleges as well as corporate events all over the country.

Pictures, audio clips from Dan's act, and more can also be found on Dan's site.

Don't miss this free show!
